    Acrylic sheet thickness tolerances are +/- 10% and can vary throughout the sheet, but variations are typically less than 5%. Please refer to nominal and actual sheet thicknesses below.

    What is Optix Acrylic?

    Optix-L sheets (formerly known as LuciteLux or Lucite L sheets) are continuous cast clear acrylic sheets with excellent properties, weather resistance, and impact resistance. Optix-L is half the weight of glass while offering 7 times the impact resistance. It is able to withstand extreme temperatures while retaining its physical properties, making it ideal for industrial and commercial applications where safety and durability is paramount. Acme Plastics' Optix-L Clear Sheets come in a variety of thicknesses. Standard sheet sizes are 25" x 51", 51" x 51", and 51" x 100" with custom cut option available.


    How Do You Cut Optix?

    Cutting Optix is similar to cutting acrylic. While Acme Plastics offers more advanced methods for cutting and machining Optix, you can cut it at home with basic tools like a scoring knife or a Dremel tool. If an optimal cut is needed, then it's best to have Optix cut by Acme Plastics.


    How to Cut Optix with a Scoring Knife

    A scoring knife is a basic way to cut thin sheets of Optix at home. Simply do the following:

    • Use a marker or ruler to indicate the area to cut
    • Use your scoring knife to create a shallow cut in the area
    • Place the Optix sheet over a table or other edge, with the cut side facing upwards
    • Use a quick and steady motion to bend the Optix sheet over the edge, resulting in a straight clean edge

    How to Cut Optix with a Dremel Tool

    A Dremel tool is another way to cut Optix sheets at home. It can cut more complex shapes than a scoring knife. Please take all necessary safety precautions before following these steps:

    • Use a marker to indicate the area that will be cut off
    • Clamp the Optix sheet down to ensure a smooth cut while preventing injury
    • Use a Dremel 561 bit set at speed six or eight
    • Slowly make the cut, using water to ensure the bit does not overheat
    • Consider sanding the edge of the Optix sheet to remove any marks

    While it is possible to cut Optix yourself, consider enlisting the help of experts to ensure the cutting process is done correctly. Having your Optix sheets machined by Acme Plastics will ensure a precise cut with a clean edge finish.
